“Advocates for the Clean Energy Jobs Act gathered Thursday to voice their support for the bill, and the community. With those in attendance saying climate change has affected local businesses such as Morrison’s Irish Pub through flooding nearly every year and Riverbend agriculture facing challenges affected by weather, supporters are looking for more support at the state capital.
Among the things this act would do is to work towards removing carbon from the state’s electric grid, along with making Illinois carbon-free. Cory Davenport, apprentice organizer for the Sierra Club tells The Big Z it would also ensure that the closure of plants will not be unexpected to their workers.
Supporters say the benefits the state would see switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy would provide $100 million annually in new investments to communities losing property tax due to closed coal plants. Davenport hopes to see local lawmakers take up the issue during the fall veto session.”
