Chicago City Council Passes Resolution in Support of $1.5 Billion in Transit Funding & Reform

CHICAGO, IL — With just days left to avert a fiscal cliff and a 40% cut in transit service that could leave Chicagoans without a way to get to work, school and doctor’s appointments, the Chicago City Council voted overwhelmingly to support a resolution calling on the Illinois General Assembly to it reform Northeastern Illinois’ transit system and invest $1.5 billion to ensure transit is fast, frequent, reliable, clean, and safe. In response, the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition released the following statement:

“There are just nine days left for lawmakers in Springfield to avert going over the fiscal cliff, which threatens to cut 40% of all bus and train service, result in the layoffs of thousands of transit operators, and worsen air and climate pollution across the region. We applaud Chicago City Council members for recognizing the urgency of the financial situation and join them in calling on the Illinois General Assembly to reform the system and invest $1.5 billion in public transit by the end of May.”
