The Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act

The Problem
Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Illinois. The harm from vehicle pollution goes beyond GHGs, and vehicle electrification alone cannot address all the dangers, particularly the negative impacts on low-income individuals and vulnerable road users.
The Solution
The Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) Act, which was passed in October 2025, will fix and fund our public transit system by investing $1.5 billion across the state. The NITA Act will:
- Implement long overdue reforms to ensure the CTA, Pace, and Metra deliver a coordinated, cost-efficient regional transit service.
- Provide transformative funding to public transportation across Illinois, increasing service frequency and reliability.
- Mitigate air and climate pollution across the state.
