Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition Applauds Passage of Strongest State Response Yet to Federal Rollback of Climate Protections

Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act set to deliver consumer savings and accelerate Illinois’ clean energy goals amid poor regional and federal policy

Illinois – Today, following passage yesterday in the House, the Illinois State Senate passed the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability (CRGA) Act (SB25), which protects consumers from energy price spikes and safeguards Illinois’ climate commitments made in the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). The Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition released the following statement:

“With the passage of the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act, Illinois is standing up to President Trump’s dismantling of the clean energy economy and boldly leading the way forward. At a time when utility bills are rising due to unprecedented demand for energy, largely driven by data centers, Illinois is taking decisive action to mitigate rising costs while solidifying our clean energy economy for generations to come.

“The CRGA Act makes transformative investments in the most cost-effective, reliable resources needed to meet growing demand: battery storage, energy efficiency, and wind and solar. This is how we protect Illinoisans from bill spikes and grow Illinois’ clean energy economy. It is also how we step away from the status quo of Illinois families paying too much to prop up expensive dirty energy plants that pad the profits of out of state fossil fuel corporations instead of building cost-effective, new clean energy resources that are better for consumers and boost economic development. We applaud the General Assembly for taking action.

“As Illinois steps forward to responsibly tackle our energy and affordability challenges, this victory must be followed by legislative action in the spring 2026 session to ensure that Big Tech and data centers, the primary driver of rising utility bills, joins the solution instead of continuing to be the problem. Illinois has proven that it can tackle complex energy policy issues while keeping equity, consumers, and worker protections at the forefront, and the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition looks forward to working with stakeholders next spring to build on that progress.”
