You don’t have to be a scientist to understand that climate change is real. Record droughts, rising seas, strangely disrupted weather patterns, ozone alert days, are all stark evidence that the world is getting hotter because of the green house gases our civilization has placed in the atmosphere.
This year in Illinois, we have a historic opportunity to address the economic costs of a changing climate. We have a moral obligation to protect our air, water and climate for future generations. As we work to build a better future for our children and grandchildren, these efforts must include ensuring good jobs and economic vitality in diverse Illinois communities so families can grow and thrive.
The Illinois Clean Jobs Bill contains solutions to ensure that no Illinois community is left behind as we shift to a clean energy economy. The proposed market-based approach in the bill will help reduce carbon pollution in a cost-effective manner while creating clean energy jobs in every Illinois community, from Alton to Waukegan.
I urge my state legislators, Rep. Keith Sommer and Sen. Bill Brady, as well as Illinois citizens and state legislators to support the Clean Jobs Bill (SB1485/HB2607).
